Japan in Autumn

Golden ginkgo trees, centuries-old temples, the lights of Tokyo, the hot springs of Hakone, and the temples of Kyoto in peak autumn color.

33 days until takeoff
A note before you go

Dear Vicknair Family,

I'm so excited for your trip to Japan. Late November is one of the loveliest moments to visit. The city's ginkgo trees turn bright gold, the air is crisp and clear, and the evenings are perfect for watching the skyline light up.

This page is your home base for the trip. You'll find your flights, your plans day by day, how to get between places, what to pack, and a short guide to Japanese customs so everyone feels at ease. I'll keep it updated as each reservation is confirmed, so the link will always show the latest version.

If anything comes up before or during your trip, I'm just a text away.

Natalie

Monday, November 23

Ropeway, Pirate Ship and the Torii on the Water

A guided half day through Hakone's highlights, then a slow afternoon in the hot springs.

10:00morning

Private half-day Hakone tour Booked

A local guide picks you up at the hotel in a private minivan for about five hours, doing the classic Hakone loop in reverse to dodge the crowds and finish right back at the ryokan. Booking BR-1456360055.

1. Hakone ShrineWalk a path lined with towering cedars to the red torii gate standing in the lake. Going first beats the photo line, and the morning light is lovely for Cole's photos.
2. Lake Ashi pirate shipFrom Moto-Hakone, a short walk from the shrine, cruise about 30 minutes to Tōgendai. Special Class is a small upgrade with fewer people and the best views up front.
3. Hakone RopewayRide up from Tōgendai to steaming Ōwakudani and try the black eggs boiled in the hot springs. Owakudani Kitchen has great views for lunch. Then ride down to Sōunzan and take the short cable car back to Gora.
Good to know
  • Monday the 23rd is a national holiday, so expect busy lines. Your guide will help keep things moving.
  • It's colder up on the mountain and over the lake, so bring warm layers.
  • The ropeway sometimes pauses for wind or volcanic activity. If it does, your guide will take an alternate route.
Afternoon

Relax at the onsen

Back at Gora Karaku, it's time to slow down. Take a long soak in the hot springs and enjoy some quiet time with the mountains. The etiquette page has a short guide to onsen bathing.

Evening

A relaxed dinner at the hotel or at one of Gora's small local restaurants. I'll help choose one that's safe for gluten-free dining.

Tuesday, November 24

By Bullet Train to Kyoto

A last morning soak in Hakone, then the Shinkansen west to Japan's ancient capital.

Morning

Breakfast, a last soak and checkout

Enjoy a slow morning at Gora Karaku before heading down the mountain.

Gora to Odawara Station · about 40 minutes by car
Midday

Shinkansen from Odawara to Kyoto Being arranged

Your seats are in the Green Car, first class, set up two by two so you can all sit together. Every seat faces forward, and you can turn a row around to face each other. The bullet train gets you to Kyoto in about two hours. Sit on the right side of the train (seats D and E) for a view of Mt. Fuji soon after leaving Odawara. Station bento boxes make a fun lunch on board.

When tickets open
  • Most seats for November 24 go on sale one month ahead, on Saturday, October 24 at 10:00 am Japan time (Friday, October 23 at 8:00 pm in Houston). I'll book your Green Car seats as soon as they open.
  • You'll ride a Hikari train, since most of the fastest Nozomi trains don't stop at Odawara. It still takes about two hours.
  • Your tickets will come as a QR code you can scan at the Odawara Station gates.
Option 1: Send your bags aheadOn Monday morning, Gora Karaku's front desk ships your big suitcases by takkyubin, Japan's luggage delivery service, and they're waiting at Six Senses when you arrive on Tuesday. It's about ¥2,000 to ¥3,000 (around $15 to $20) per bag. You travel light, so pack a small overnight bag for Monday night.
Option 2: Bring them on the trainYour driver takes everything to Odawara. Carry-on bags fit on the overhead racks. Large suitcases need a seat with an oversized baggage area, which I'll reserve with your tickets at no extra cost. You'll handle your bags on and off the train yourselves.

Just let me know which you prefer. If you choose to send your bags ahead, I'll confirm the Monday cutoff time with the hotel.

Kyoto Station to Six Senses · about 10 to 15 minutes by car
Afternoon

Check in at Six Senses Kyoto

Settle in and stretch your legs. Sanjūsangen-dō, with its hall of 1,001 golden statues of the goddess Kannon, is right nearby. It's an unforgettable first stop in Kyoto. In late November it closes at 4 pm, so go soon after you arrive.

Earlymorning

Thousands of bright orange torii gates wind up the mountain. Go by 8 am, before the crowds, and walk as far as you like. It's 10 to 15 minutes by car from the hotel.

Morning

The great wooden terrace of Kiyomizu-dera looks out over a sea of autumn maples. Walk down the stone lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, past tea shops and pottery stores, toward Gion.

Day

Arashiyama

The famous bamboo grove, Tenryū-ji's garden, and the Togetsukyō bridge framed by fall color. It's about 40 minutes by car, so it makes a good half day.

Good to know in Kyoto
  • Autumn color brings big crowds, so the earlier you start each day, the better.
  • Some private lanes in Gion don't allow visitors or photos. Follow the signs and never photograph geiko or maiko without permission.
  • Taxis or a private car are the easiest way between sights, since Kyoto's buses get very full.

Traffic is heavier on Friday evenings and over the Nov 21 to 23 holiday weekend, so allow a little extra time.

Your private drivers

Your drivers are booked, and I'll share their names, numbers and pickup times before you leave. Tokyo addresses are tricky even for locals, so keep the hotel's card handy and let your driver handle the routes.

Taxis

Taxis are spotless and honest, and cards are widely accepted. The back door opens and closes on its own, so let it. The GO app works like Uber, and larger taxis comfortably fit four.

Trains and the subway

Fast and easy to use. Add a Suica card to Apple Wallet and tap in and out. Avoid rush hour (7:30 to 9:30 am and 5:30 to 7:30 pm), keep voices low, and stand on the left on escalators.

Before you go

Everything to know before you pack

63°FTypical daytime high
48°FTypical evening low
4:30 pmSunset in late November

What to pack

  • Layers and a light coat for cool evenings and rooftop views
  • Comfortable shoes that slip on and off easily, since you'll remove them often
  • Shorts or roll-up pants for teamLab
  • A warmer layer for Hakone, which runs about 10°F cooler than Tokyo
  • Nice socks without holes
  • A small pouch for trash, since public bins are rare

Passports and arrival

  • US travelers don't need a visa for stays of up to 90 days.
  • Fill in Visit Japan Web before you fly so immigration and customs are quick QR scans.
  • Carry your passport with you, as it's required by law and needed for tax-free shopping.

Money

  • Cards work at hotels, restaurants, shops and taxis.
  • Keep some yen on hand for temples, stalls and small shops. 7-Eleven ATMs accept US cards.
  • There's no tipping in Japan. Great service is simply part of the culture.
  • Spend over ¥5,000 in one store and you can shop tax-free with your passport.

Phones and essentials

  • An eSIM such as Airalo or Ubigi, or your carrier's travel plan, keeps you connected.
  • Outlets are the same shape as at home, so no adapter is needed.
  • In an emergency, dial 110 for police or 119 for an ambulance.

A word on medications

Japan bans some common US medicines, including anything with pseudoephedrine (like Sudafed) and stimulant ADHD medications such as Adderall. Please send me a list of any prescriptions you're bringing and I'll check them for you.

Gluten-free dining

The Aman knows about the celiac needs in your group, and I'm sharing them with each hotel ahead of your stay. In Japan, regular soy sauce, miso, tempura batter and most noodles contain wheat, and shared fryers are common. Ask for gluten-free soy sauce. I'll also prepare a card in Japanese that explains everything, so you can show it at any restaurant.
